How to make a Wi-Fi QR code your guests can scan
Create a QR code that connects phones to your Wi-Fi network without typing the password, print it, and keep it secure.
Updated: 28 October 2026
Reading out a long Wi-Fi password is tedious for everyone. A Wi-Fi QR code lets guests join your network by pointing their phone camera at it. The current camera apps on iPhone and Android recognise this kind of code.
What you need
- The exact network name (SSID), including capital letters and spaces.
- The password.
- The security type: almost always WPA/WPA2/WPA3 on a modern router. Choose “None” only for an open network.
Create the code
- Open the Wi-Fi QR Code generator.
- Enter the network name and password, and choose the security type.
- Tick “Hidden network” only if your router does not broadcast its name.
- Download the code as PNG for printing, or SVG if you want to scale it to any size.
- Test it: scan it with your own phone before you print it.
The code is created in your browser. Your network name and password are not sent anywhere.
Printing tips
- Print it at least 3 cm (about 1.2 inches) wide for scanning at arm’s length. Bigger is better on a wall.
- Keep the white margin around the code; scanners need it.
- Dark code on a light background scans most reliably. Check that the colours have enough contrast if you change them.
- Add a short line of text such as “Scan to join the Wi-Fi”, and the network name, for people whose camera does not recognise it.
Security notes
Anyone who can see the code can join your network, and some phones show the password after scanning. For visitors, a separate guest network on your router is a good idea. If you change the password, make a new code. You can check what an existing code contains with the QR Code Reader.
